Korčula Kayaking: Essential Insights for Your Journey
Thinking about joining us for a Bits of History or Sunset kayak tour?
We believe the finest explorers are the well-prepared ones. This guide is designed to provide a transparent look at what to expect when navigating the Korčula archipelago with Spirit of Korkyra.
The Experience: Intimate & Intentional
What is the group size?
We strictly limit our tours to a maximum of 10 passengers. This “semi-private” approach is what sets us apart. It ensures you aren’t just a face in a crowd; it allows for personal interaction with your guide, a quieter atmosphere on the water, and a pace that respects your individual comfort.
Is this a technical expedition or a leisure tour?
Our tours are designed for immersion, not endurance. Rated “Easy” to “Moderate,” they are accessible to anyone with a basic level of fitness. We begin every session with a 20-minute briefing on sea kayaking techniques and safety. We move at a deliberate, relaxed pace—allowing you to actually see the coastline, not just paddle past it.
Is the tour suitable for children?
Yes, families love our tours! We select our routes to be engaging and manageable for young explorers, making it a perfect outdoor education day. Depending on their age, children can sit in a double kayak with one parent. Min. age is 6.
What if I/we get tired during the paddle?
There is no reason to worry. Our guides are there to support you, and our pace is intentionally relaxed. We have several planned stops for swimming and resting at the most scenic locations in the archipelago. We move as a group, and no one is ever left behind.
Can we book a private tour for our family or group?
Absolutely. If you prefer complete privacy and a pace tailored specifically to your needs, we can create a “tailor-made” experience. Whether it’s a special occasion or a specific focus on history or relaxation, we can customize the itinerary just for you.
The Spirit of Korkyra Approach
What distinguishes this experience from a standard rental?
We offer a curated, multi-dimensional perspective of the archipelago. Most tours and rentals only provide the “how” (the gear) and the sea; we provide the “where” and the “why.”
Because our groups are strictly limited to 10 guests, we can offer a semi-private, guided experience that blends sea and land. Unlike standard tours, we don’t just stay on the water:
- Badija Island: We lead a guided walking tour through the serene grounds of the 14th-century Franciscan monastery, sharing the island’s spiritual and natural history while encountering the resident fallow deer.
- Vrnik Island: We explore the famous stone quarries on foot, discussing how this small island’s unique white limestone helped build some of the world’s most famous landmarks, from the Hagia Sophia to the White House.
This combination of professional kayaking and guided heritage walks allows you to truly understand the soul of the islands, reaching quiet bays and historical sites that larger, boat-based groups cannot access.
Meeting the fallow deer on Badija Island?
Our Bits of History (whole and half-day) and Sunset routes include a stop at Badija Island, home to a unique colony of fallow deer. While they are wild animals and roam freely, they are accustomed to our quiet, small-group presence and often greet us at the shoreline—a rare encounter in the heart of the Adriatic.
Exploring beneath the surface
While our primary focus is kayaking and heritage, the clarity of the water at our “surprise stops” is remarkable. We always allow time for a swim. We suggest bringing your own mask and snorkel if you wish to explore the underwater landscape of the islets.
Local Flavors & Homemade Traditions
What kind of refreshments are served on the tour?
We take great pride in sharing the authentic flavors of Lumbarda. On our Bits of History and Sunset Tour, you will enjoy:
- Grk Wine – Family Produced: A world-renowned white wine made from an indigenous grape variety grown exclusively in the sandy vineyards of Lumbarda. It’s a rare, protected local treasure you won’t find anywhere else.
- Homemade “Klašun” Pastries: These traditional cakes are hand-baked by Ivka herself, following a cherished recipe passed down from her aunt. It’s a true taste of Korčula’s culinary heritage.
- Local Savories (only on Sunset tour): We serve cheese and traditional anchovy canapés to perfectly complement the wine.
I have dietary restrictions. Can I still participate?
Definitely. Please notify us 24 hours in advance for vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free requirements so we can prepare a special treat for you.
Don’t worry—before every tour, we send a quick check-in to all our guests to gather your info and preferences so we can make sure you’re all set! 🙂
Logistics & Gear
Where and when do we start?
Our tours typically start at 09:00 or 16:30/16:00/15:30 from our base in Tatinja Bay, Lumbarda.
You can find our exact location on Google Maps right here: Spirit of Korkyra Meeting Point
Do you offer pickups?
Yes! If you aren’t staying in Lumbarda, we can pick you up in front of your hotel (Korčula town area, Žrnovo village, etc).
Alternatively, we pick up our guests at the main bus station in Korčula town – on Google Maps here: Main Bus Station Pickup Link. Just let us know in advance if you need a lift.
What should I wear and bring? To keep you comfortable on the water and during our island walks, we suggest the following:
- Wear: Swimsuit, light shorts, and a t-shirt (lycra/quick-dry is best).
- Protection: Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
- Footwear: Water shoes or strapped sandals like Teva, Keen, etc. (flip-flops are okay if you do not have water shoes).
Is there a place to leave my “land clothes”?
Yes! While we provide dry bags for your camera, phone, and towels/spare clothes to take with you, you can also leave your non-essential bags and dry clothes locked on shore.
What kind of specialized equipment do you use?
To ensure a smooth glide through the Adriatic, we use high-end, stable “sit-in” sea kayaks: P&H (Leo/Virgo) or Venture (Jura/Capella) for single paddlers and Prijon Poseidon for doubles. This isn’t standard rental gear; these are professional boats chosen for their tracking and comfort.
Safety & Weather
Weather protocols and peace of mind
Your safety is our priority. If the winds (like the Maestral, Bura, or Jugo) exceed safe paddling limits, we may reschedule the tour or offer a full refund. We monitor the forecast hourly and will contact you as early as possible if things look a bit “choppy.”
Are there bathrooms on the route?
Facilities are limited once we are out on the smaller islets. There are restrooms in some restaurants and bars on some of the islands, but we recommend using the facilities at home before the tour.
Booking & Payments
How can I pay for my tour?
We offer several convenient ways to pay:
- Cash: We accept Euros on the day of the tour.
- Online: Via pay-by-link with your credit or debit card.
- Bank Transfer: We can send you an invoice with IBAN details for payment
Please note: While we accept cash on the day for our Half-Day and Full-Day tours, payments for Multi-day Kayak Tours and Sea Kayak Training Camps must be completed in full in advance via bank transfer to secure your spot and logistics.
Why choose Spirit of Korkyra over a large agency?
Because we don’t believe in “mass tourism.” We are a small, local team that truly loves our island, and we treat every guest like a friend. With our strictly limited groups (max 10), you aren’t just a number on a list—you are a fellow explorer sharing an adventure we’ll all remember.
